How to Make Your Very Own Homemade Deodorant

Updated: 5 days ago

Hello, Happy Army!

I wish I was kidding, but this actually happened to me recently:

I woke up in the morning, super groggy and definitely not in the mood to go to work. I slowly brushed your teeth, showered, lotion-ed, the whole nine-yards.

I reached for my drawer, and it suddenly hit me:

I ran out of deodorant.

Yeah, the stick thing that we think never runs out? Guess it finally ran out! And since I don’t want people smelling me from a mile away (not the good kind), I gotta come up with something fast!

Now, I’m the type of person who likes to store a surplus of products, so I may have an extra one ready to go. But not everyone can to do that, nor do a lot of people want to do that!

After all, there are a multitude of people who like to experiment with scents, textures, etc.

Besides, the chemicals that are in store-bought deodorants are astonishing!

  • Aluminum: clogs pores, and is linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease

  • Parabens: may be endocrine disruptors

  • Phthalates: potential adverse effects on our reproductive health

  • Triclosan: linked to antibiotic resistance and is a potential hormonal disruptor

  • Propylene Glycol: can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation

Should I go on?

Now, you can get natural deodorants, but they are so expensive, and I have yet to find a brand that actually does the job. 20 dollars for a stick of deodorant that doesn’t work?

Thanks for the offer, but no thank you!

So what’s the solution?

Homemade deodorant!

I am telling you, the recipe and the steps are so easy, you can make it first thing in the morning if you ever run out!

You can find most, if not all, the ingredients needed in your kitchen, so it's a big money saver.

It’s completely customizable, so you can make it thicker, thinner, add different scents, stronger, lighter, the choices are endless.

And it works like a charm! I’ve been using this recipe for 3 years, and my friends are shocked when I tell them that I made my deodorant from scratch, at home. They genuinely couldn’t tell the difference!

It’s a serious game changer!

Just by using 3-4 ingredients that I found in my kitchen I was able to make a deodorant that lasted me almost 2 years! It’s 100% natural, 100% effective, and 100% attainable at any age, anytime, anywhere.

I also added the ingredients I use for my deodorant, so if we are not exactly sure where to start, I got your back! Just click on the ingredients!

So no more gate-keeping. This is how I make my deodorant:

What You'll need:

-1/2 cup coconut oil

-1/2 cup arrowroot powder (you can also use cornstarch if you don’t have arrowroot powder at home)

- 1/4 cup baking soda (you can use less baking soda if you have sensitive skin)

- 6-10 drops of any essential oil (this is completely optional but it's a lot of fun!)

- 1 container (hopefully something cute cause why not? I’ll be honest though, the container I used was not cute!)

- 1 small mixing bowl

- 1 spoon

Directions:

First, you have to melt the coconut oil in a microwave-safe container.

Next, add the corn starch and baking soda into the oil. If you want, now is the time to add the essential oils as well.

Mix it all together. Use the back of the spoon to smooth out the mixture so it becomes very creamy.

Then put it into your container. I just used a pyrex container that was sitting around the house. Wait for the coconut oil to solidify and it's ready to be used!

To apply, take a small amount of the deodorant and apply it to your underarms.

Just So You Know...

Keep in mind that the deodorant might melt a little during the warmer months. It's really not that big of a deal, but if it's that bad you can put it in a lunch bag with an ice pack or put it in the fridge.

Also, as a professional dancer, I want to give you a heads-up: if you lead a very active lifestyle and sweat frequently, or if you prefer to keep your natural body hair, this might not be as effective for you.

Underarm hair tends to hold onto your natural scent—both the good and the not-so-good. Try adjusting your baking soda measurements to find the right amount that works best for you!

And keep in mind, this won’t completely stop sweating, but that’s actually a good thing! Sweating is your body’s way of releasing toxins, an essential function for your health.

And that's it! It's super easy and super effective, and I recommend everyone to try this.

That's it for now! Sending positive vibes your way, and happy exploring!
