Welcome back, Happy Army!
We're gonna talk about my favorite topic: Finding the right kinds of foods according to your body type based on Ayurveda!
Now, I know food is kind of a messy subject, and it can bring up a lot of negative feelings for people. But don't panic. We aren't going to talk about any strict diets or super expensive programs.
Ayurveda is all about understanding your dosha—or unique constitution— so that you can stay balanced and healthy in accordance to your body.
And today, we are diving right in on all things Vata!
I love talking about Vata body types, but I may be a little biased since I just so happened to be a Vata girly, myself!
But enough about me.
If you’re a vata type (such as myself), you’re connected to the elements of air and ether, which means you’re likely full of creativity, movement, and change.
But all that airy energy can sometimes lead to feelings of restlessness and even burnout.

Example: I'll work like crazy for 3 months, and then I'm suddenly out-of-service for the following 2 months.
Vata energy at its finest.
Luckily, the right foods can help! In this post, we’ll explore a variety of grounding, nourishing foods specifically chosen to uplift and sustain vata individuals.
We will be focusing on:

The Vata Diet Philosophy
Vata types do best with foods that are warm, grounding, and rich in healthy fats. These qualities help balance out the light, erratic energy that’s common for vata types.
By choosing foods that bring stability and nourishment, you can replenish your energy and enjoy a sense of calm vitality.
Energizing Foods for Vata Types
Healthy Fats
Add nourishing fats from foods like avocados, ghee, coconut oil, and nuts. These fats provide long-lasting energy and help balance vata’s natural lightness.
Cooked Foods
I know that salads get advertised as the healthy meal, but vata people, please don't listen to them!
Warm, cooked foods like rice and curries are a far better option. They’re easier to digest and offer a comforting, grounding effect that raw foods often lack.
Root Vegetables
Root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets, have a grounding effect on vata’s airy energy and are super nourishing. They'll also keep you full longer.
The Butternut Squash and Spinach Curry (recipe found in The Hot Belly Diet by Dr. Suhas G. Kshirasagar), is genuinely incredible! it's this super warm and comforting curry that is so calming, so warming, and it actually tastes so good! It is literally the perfect vata dinner, and it personally put my body back in balance! Click the link, I promise you won't regret it!
Whole Grains
Go for whole grains like oats, quinoa, and brown rice. They provide steady energy and help keep vata’s tendency toward fluctuations in check.
Warming Spices
Spices are a vata person's best friend. Our bodies tend to be really cold, and that airiness causes issues for our digestion and messes with our blood circulation.
Spices like cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom are great for digestion and bring a cozy warmth to your meals.
The only kind of spice I would stay away from is chilis. While it is definitely warming, chilis tend to aggravate our pitta rather than balance vata. Instead, opt for black pepper to give your food a bit of a kick!
Protein-Rich Foods
Add protein sources like lentils, chickpeas, and tofu. Getting enough protein helps keep energy levels steady and wards off depletion.
Plus, vata people tend to be extremely lean, often lacking muscle and fat. Eating more protein can help build more muscle, which will help support our bones and reduce pain in our joints.
Herbal Teas
Sorry to all the coffee lovers, but coffee is something we would have to stay away from. It aggravates vata body types due to the intense caffeine spikes.
Sip on herbal teas like chamomile, ginger, and licorice. They’re soothing and grounding, helping calm vata’s natural restlessness.
Oils and Fats
Use high-quality oils like olive oil and sesame oil in your cooking. They provide much-needed lubrication to counteract vata’s dryness, especially for our joints.
Nourishing Soups and Stews
Enjoy hearty soups and stews made with root veggies, legumes, and warming spices. They’re comforting and packed with nourishment. Plus, they are extremely grounding.
Regular Meals
No vata person is going to like this, but it needs to be said:
Keeping a regular meal routine is key for vata types. Which is super difficult for us.
How many times have I, as a vata person, forgotten to eat because I was too consumed with what I was working on in that moment? Numerous.
But it's one of those things that we just need to work on. It helps maintain steady energy and prevents the ups and downs that vata can be prone to.
Fasting, intentional or unintentional, is not for this body type.
I suggest keeping an alarm to make sure we are eating on time. I have an alarm once at 8am for breakfast, another at 1:30pm for lunch, and again at 7:30pm for dinner. And I definitely sneak in a snack at around 4pm.
And Finally
The best food for boosting your energy and well-being as a vata individual means focusing on foods that ground and nourish. Keep your focus on a warm, grounding, and nourishing diet, and you'll be able to keep restlessness at bay.
But finding the right ingredients is just the first step. The next hurdle is creating time-efficient meals that are healthy for you. And that's not easy. Luckily, The Hot Belly Diet by Dr. Suhas G. Kshirsagar has a bunch of recipes that are easy to make and delicious! it's divided up based on Ayurvedic dosha, so you cannot go wrong with any of these meals. It also covers a 30-day body reset so that you can start your health journey on the right foot! I cannot recommend this book enough.
That's it for now! Sending positive vibes your way, and happy exploring!
